About Our Free CDL Practice Tests
Our free CDL practice tests are designed to help you prepare for the Commercial Driver License written exam administered by your state DMV. With over 3,000 practice questions covering all test categories, you can study at your own pace and track your progress. Each question includes a detailed explanation to help you understand the correct answer and the reasoning behind it.
The CDL knowledge test consists of multiple sections depending on the type of commercial vehicle you plan to drive. All CDL applicants must pass the General Knowledge test, which covers safe driving practices, cargo securement, vehicle inspection, and federal motor carrier regulations. If your vehicle has air brakes, you must also pass the Air Brakes test to remove the air brake restriction from your license.
Class A CDL applicants who will drive tractor-trailers must pass the Combination Vehicles test, which covers coupling and uncoupling procedures, trailer stability, and jackknife prevention. Additional endorsement tests are required for specific cargo and vehicle types: Hazmat for hazardous materials, Tanker for liquid cargo, Passenger for buses, School Bus for student transportation, and Doubles/Triples for pulling multiple trailers.
Our practice tests offer two study modes to match your learning style. DMV Simulator mode provides a timed test experience that mirrors the actual exam, helping you manage time pressure and build confidence. Learning Mode allows you to study without time limits, showing immediate feedback and explanations after each question. We recommend starting with Learning Mode to master the material, then switching to Simulator mode to practice under exam conditions.
CDL test questions are federally standardized, meaning the core content is the same across all states. However, some states like Texas have additional state-specific requirements. Our question bank is regularly updated to reflect the latest 2026 regulations and testing standards. To pass the CDL written test, you typically need to score 80 percent or higher on each section.
